C Layton Merritt, President of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange, prepares to drop his gavel for the final time following one minute of silence to officially end the lucrative "futures" market.
His son Eddie was a High School classmate, and at our recent 65th reunion, I promised to send him a copy of this historic photo which is also part of the New Orleans Museum of Art collection.
His father spent a lifetime at the Exchange. from the age of 13 when he started as a messenger boy before WWI.
